Gathering Paper Ballots on Election Day with Ranked Choice Voting

Polls are open from 6 AM to 7 PM. The first hour is generally slow and not worth it. We account a full day as 8 AM to 6 PM, but that can be flexible. Based on past experience, the average number of ballots collected should be about 10 per hour. It can range from 5 to 20 per hour, depending on time and location.

For a 10-hour day, base pay of $100 plus $1 per completed ballot turned in. A $20 bonus for turning in a hundred or more. For a 5-10 hour stint, base pay of $10 hour plus $1 per completed ballot turned in. For less than five hours, $1 per completed ballot turned in. For income tax purposes, you report this as self-employment pay; we pay the full amount without deductions for social security, etc. If you use this as a fund-raiser for an organization and therefore assign the pay to them, then it never counts on your income.

Training and Materials

Short training sessions will be held at library meeting rooms and Zoom from July 12 on; schedule TBA. Ballots and lit explaining RCV can be picked up at those sessions, or otherwise by arrangement.
