KC City Council Candidate Stances on RCV

District 1 at-large

Kevin O'Neill (Incumbent)

 Position: Long-time supporter of ranked choice voting in the current Council. 

Position: Was given information at a candidate forum, but needs time to form a position. 

District 1

Position: From an email message:  "I support Ranked Choice Voting." 

Position: Not yet communicated to us. 

District 2 at-large

Position: From an email message: "I do support RCV. I have been spending a lot of time knocking on doors, and people seem confused about coming out to vote in a primary and general instead of a single election."  You can also hear more about why Jenay supports RCV in the snippet above.

Position: She has stated to us verbally that she’s a strong supporter of ranked choice voting. 

District 2

Position: From an email message: " I have supported rank-choice voting for years going back to the first time I ran for the state legislature in 2018. I still support it and I will support it when I am on the city council." 

District 3 at-large

Brandon Ellington (Incumbent)

Position: We’ve had many discussions. He's stated his position as "not opposed."

Position: From an email message:  "I characterize myself as undecided," and asked many thoughtful questions.  

District 3 

Melissa Robinson (Incumbent)

Position: Favors ranked choice voting.  

Position: Was given information at a candidate forum and responded positively, but needs time to form a position. 

District 4 at-large

Position: A very strong supporter of ranked choice voting, and says he would introduce a bill on it if still needed for the new Council. 

Position: Was given information at a candidate forum, but needs time to form a position. 

District 4 

Position: A strong supporter of ranked choice voting.  

Position: Told us at a forum that he favors ranked choice voting.   

District 5 at-large

Position: “I fully support ranked choice voting in KCMO, and would support efforts to put it on the ballot.”  He also brought RCV up at a candidate forum in answer to a question on encouraging voting, and submitted written testimony to the city's Charter Review Commission urging them to include RCV in their recommendations.

Position: From an email: "I'm still doing my research. But at this time I would not be in favor." 

District 5

Ryanna Parks Shaw (Incumbent)

Position: Has been positive, not yet stated a position to us; we’ve had many discussions. 

District 6 at-large

Andrea Bough (Incumbent)

Position: Not yet stated a position to us; we’ve had many discussions. 

Position: On her Facebook page, she says she is against ranked choice voting 

District 6 

Position: Told us at a forum that he thinks favorably about ranked choice voting.  

Position: Was given information at a candidate forum, said he had heard a little about RCV and would look at the information.
